Teacher Recommended, Parent Approved!

First of all, let me introduce myself.

My name is Curt Malyar.  I’ve worked with thousands of children (just like yours!) for over 35 years.  I’m now teaching the children of people who trained in my program as kids.  I have been training in the martial arts for nearly 40 years.

I've trained with and given seminars to many martial artists around the country. I originally trained in New Jersey with Gary Alexander (the “Greatest Isshin Ryu Fighter of all Time” as dubbed by Black Belt Magazine) and in 1972 was honored to receive my 1st degree black belt under Karate extraordinaire Richard Mrofka. I first trained in Isshin Ryu Karate and have developed my style of American Karate from a variety of martial arts such as: Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Wrestling and Kickboxing.
I currently train with Martial Arts legends Hall of Fame members Bill “Superfoot” Wallace, Professional Karate Association's Middleweight Champion and undefeated champion in his 15 year career of tournament and full contact fighting and Joe Lewis, World Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion. I was the first person to be awarded black belts by these legends. Teaching for me has been a lifelong passion. I've pushed myself to master both the arts of karate and teaching.  I have a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters Degree in Physical Education and Exercise Science. In addition, I am also the head instructor for the karate and self defense classes at East Tennessee State University.

USA Karate has an award winning children's program and has been very successful in helping students reach their goals in martial arts and life. Our students are taught through a carefully developed curriculum that allows them to build the confidence and skills they need in the modern world. Our efforts have been recognized by our peers in the martial arts community, nationally and internationally.

Here's The 'USA Karate Method': A Ten Point Program to Build Better Students

1.  Positive Role Models:  The biggest asset of USA Karate - the instructors.  They are not like the teachers you’ve seen in the martial art movies.  Are they “tough guys?”  Yes.  But what you will notice (and so will your child)…is that they are also “Nice Guys.” They have been hand-selected because they are wonderful people…and have a great love of helping others benefit from the Martial Arts!   All of our teachers are also students, they care about each student individually and are committed to helping your child reach his or her potential.
2.  Physical Fitness:  So many schools have eliminated or reduced the PE classes, children don't have the opportunity to have any physical release. They sit for 5, 6, sometimes 7 hours with very little time to expend any physical energy. Then they get home and sit to watch TV, do homework, eat dinner and play video games. This is a major contributor to the childhood obesity rates that are skyrocketing! The prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 more than doubled in the past 20 years, going from 6.5% in 1980 to 17.0% in 2006. (www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/obesity) However, even if your child is not overweight, they will still benefit from the fitness aspects of our program.
3. A High Energy, Exciting Environment:  Many children have grown accustomed to virtual activities (video games, television, internet). Participating in an exciting, high energy environment, focused on an actual activity, will give your child a very real sense of achievement!
4.  Regular Incentives for Effort and Achievement:  The belts and stripes provide positive feedback and recognition of accomplishment, incentives for improvement, applause, smiles, and high-fives and will systematically lead your child into the “Yes, I Can!” attitude you’ve always wanted for him or her.
5.  The “Success Based Community”:  Peer pressure can be a good thing when your children are in a supportive group where achievement, self-improvement and development are the norm. Our instructors and students form a community where the traits of respect, discipline, focus, persistence, courage, discipline and confidence are the standard. The more they are exposed to this the more it becomes part of their mindset.
6.  A Proven System of Skill Development:  No fancy theories or hard to understand concepts.  Our instructors are experts in teaching the actual SKILLS of listening and focus.  Hint:  We’ll be teaching these to your child in the very first week!
7.  A Series of Positively Constructed Challenges will build your child’s confidence.  You will be delighted as you see your children confidently move outside their comfort zone.  As the weeks go by, you will smile with pride as your son or daughter moves from challenge to challenge…their confidence soaring at each new accomplishment!
8.  An Atmosphere of Respect:  You watch with satisfaction as your children learn to give and earn respect.  Most importantly, they learn the essential lessons of Self-Respect!
9.  Order and Structure:  Even though the atmosphere is friendly and supportive, Karate is not “play time.” You will be delighted to see how your children develop focus and persistence in our orderly, structured environment.
10.  A Friendship Based Environment:  If you are expecting the old, harsh, authoritarian, military style Martial Art training…you are going to be disappointed.  When you visit us, you will find a friendly, supportive environment.  Some of the teachers and long time students have been friends for nearly 20 years.  That atmosphere of friendship, support, and respect will give your child the support he or she needs to succeed!
